The thing to ask yourself at the end of Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter won’t be “Should that movie have been made?”. The question instead will clearly be “Does the human race need to make another movie or will an future attempt pale in comparison?”

Who knew Don Cornelius offing himself would rip the band aid off so much pre-tween angst?
Let it all out people, which was your favorite Saturday morning cartoon and why

I generally think that people who stand around crying over the death of people they don’t know are ridiculous. I mean there was no greater sign of the devolution of America into some cringe worthy semblance of the world in Super Sad Love Story than all those people leaving a bunch of candles at Apple Stores when Steve Jobs died. At what point did we kill Jesus and start praying to the alter of over priced products, good design and massive human rights violations? When? Did I get booted off the list serve or something?
Allow me to step outside of this for a minute and say that when I heard Don Cornelius had died I was pretty sad to hear it. Not because my current life will some how be less fulfilled with out him in it. That’s not the case and it would be an even sadder statement about me if it were. It has nothing to do with the present me but it is just another nail in the coffin of my being a kid and that gives me pause.
When I was a kid, my non-cable having ass was desperate for UHF entertainment I could find. For some reason, I found it, at least partially, on Saturday Mornings with a revitalized and syndicated Soul Train. I couldn’t even tell you how long I watched it but i remember watching it when i was very young and again later in my pre-teen years. Now that show evolved dramatically, veering from R&B and Disco towards hip hop and at some point, Don stopped hosting it and that took something away. Eventually, I lost interest but I remember it and it mattered and thinking back on those mornings make me smile even now.
Anyway, whatever. I just wanted to take a moment to wish him, his family and all of you – Peace Love and Sooooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuul!

Wow, Ben Folds is reuniting with the other two guys Five!
The above is Manolo’s favorite Ben Folds song. I don’t remember meeting the guy but I know this is his favorite Ben Folds song. How gay is it that I know that? Super gay!
Further gayness: true story, back at University the only CD Manolo had was Inxs’ Kick. Crazy! I know! And gayer than me knowing that is that he owned it! And now back to our regularly scheduled gayness….
For the hardest core Foldphiles, here is an NYU law accapella group singing SLNiT

The Oscar nominations came out today. I don’t know much about any of the nominated movies, but there is one category I know very well indeed: Music (Original Song). Back in November, Catjjy and I took the Cha to see The Muppets. He loved the music and got us to buy the soundtrack. Since then, we’ve heard it roughly every day. Thankfully, there are a number of terrific songs on the album, all written by Bret McKenzie, whom you will remember as half of the New Zealand musicomedy duo Flight of the Conchords.
Today Bret was nominated for an Oscar for his song “Man or Muppet.” It’s a terrific song and definitely deserves the nomination. My only complaint is that there are 1-2 more original songs from the same movie that are even better but did not get nominations. “Life’s a Happy Song” is, I think , unquestionably better. “Me Party” is also pretty fun, depending on your tolerance for disco (mine is quite high).
In a strange move meant to speed up the awards show, The Academy only nominated two songs for the category this year. The other contender is some fake-Basso Nova Will.I.Am abomination from the already-forgotten animated movie Rio. Should be a slam-dunk Oscar for our favorite Kiwi Hipster. Wooo!

While I was watching Tree Of Life, I realized that it was clearly going to be one of these “important” movies…and it was probably going to be nominated for something.
That did not keep me from thinking the whole thing was a bit incoherent. Further, tt did not keep me from laughing when life emerged from primordial ooze or when we got an extreme close up of a dinosaur carcass.
If you watch the trailer above I’m sure you think I am using hyperbole, tragically…I’m not…these things actually happened and were shown over the course of this rather brutal character study of a man (Sean Pann) who reflect on his youth in Texas by his strict father and his mother who he’s idealized…
Meh…

Pretty song from Nada Surf. Surprisingly pretty, though it throughs off a similar vibe to Death Cab’s more commercial efforts.
Also surprising is that Popular came out in 96! Holy crap that was a long time ago…Anyone else feeling old?

ET#2 and i were trying to figure out when christmas songs actually become popular. In our lifetime for example, that one Mariah Carey song has gone from being a new pop song to a Christmas staple.
I thought there were others. For example, my inbred jersey ass thought that “Santa Claus is coming to town” was written by Bruce Springsteen in 1979 but apparently I’m wrong there.
Anyway, just another question I will probably never get answered.
